Dealing With a Case of Incest

5 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife. And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning and have put out of your fellowship the man who has been doing this? For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus on the one who has been doing this. So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh,[a][b] so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.

Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11 But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister[c] but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.

12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? 13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”[d]

(1) sometimes it’s easy to do something wrong, and boast and brag about it–especially to people we think will be impressed. And others will talk about their deeds that they should be ashamed of and begging God for forgiveness for, yet they are unashamed and even proud…and we say nothing against it, maybe even encourage it. We need to confront those who claim to be Christ’s with the sin we see in their lives and remind them that Christ died to pay for that sin, and they need to respect that. And we need to respect His sacrifice ourselves…

… Hey God… I has lots to pray about. M&M need help… Father please draw him back to you–no matter what it takes, please just speak your truth into his life and open his eyes and ears to your voice and your love and break down the walls of anger and guilt and self-hatred and lies. Please draw her closer to you, strengthen and protect her. Soften her heart, continue to give her love and forgiveness and remove her anger and bitterness. Bring restoration and redemption and trust–and you, lots of you–back into their lives and friendship. I pray that you would give her and I wisdom about what you want her to do, how long you want her to hold on and stick out this hurt and trial. God I know you can bring restoration and I know you can heal the broken and I know you are the redeemer of all things. Father I pray that you would encourage her in a way she understands completely. Encourage her and give her the strength to do what needs to be done. Father God I pray that if you have a deadline for this–and I know you see the end of all things so you know what that deadline is–I pray that you would be merciful and show me what it is so I can encourage her with it. Encourage her to stick it out–so long–. God… I pray that you would be gentle with her, and please please please give her wisdom and patience and endurence and sustain her. Father reach out to her and please draw her more and more into your Presence and under your wings. Please give me wisdom and encouragement to share with her. I pray for S&C, that you’d be with them on their “real” honeymoon, draw them closer together as a couple, may you fill them with happy sunshiney memories and just bless their marriage and friendship and draw them closer to you. Father please help them to relax and destress and just enjoy each other and you and your wonderful creation. Please show them where you want them to work and how and where you want them to minister when they get back. I pray for J&J that you’d be in their relationship from the beginning, that you’d protect them and guide them and draw them closer to you and to each other, please let them be the right people for each other. I pray for my brother, that you’d be with him, father please draw him closer to you, give him strength to get through work, joy from your love and light, endurance, love for the people he works with, and guidance as to where to go from here. Please encourage him. Please please protect his heart as well, and guide his friendship with her to where it should be. Please please please protect his heart and open her eyes to what you’re doing in him and with him. I pray for R&G that you’d please provide them with a good job or jobs, and guide them to where you want them to be. Please be with P as well… encourage him and show him where you want him and what you want him doing, please guide him and draw him closer to you. I pray for my sister that she’d pass her drivers test this next time, and I pray that you’d guide her to where you want her to be, and into the arms of the husband you’ve prepared for her. God… please… be with all of these people I love so much, please open their hearts to you, speak your truth into their lives, guide them and direct them. Father hold them close and lift them up. God, please love on them. I pray especially for my wonderful husband that you’d be with him, encourage and support him. Strengthen him and keep him trusting you for all his needs. Please draw him closer to you. I pray for our baby, that they would come… like, now… God, you know my heart, and my fears, and my needs, and my desires, and my limits. You know what’s best. God, I trust you to do everything in the right time. I beg and plead with you for now to be the right time…Please please please, have mercy on me and make it swift. I know you know what’s best, but, I pray with all my heart that your best is for right now, soon, today… something in the very very near future… Thank you for being a good God who knows and does what is best. and please help me to love on my neighbor like you want her to be loved on. Give me the words and encouragement and support and love to share with her that she needs. Help me to be a good friend to those you’ve surrounded me with… especially my husband… please help me to love him like you created him to be loved and like you love him.

1 Corinthians 4

New International Version (NIV)

The Nature of True Apostleship

4 This, then, is how you ought to regard us: as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the mysteries God has revealed. Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.

Now, brothers and sisters, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, “Do not go beyond what is written.” Then you will not be puffed up in being a follower of one of us over against the other. For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?

Already you have all you want! Already you have become rich! You have begun to reign—and that without us! How I wish that you really had begun to reign so that we also might reign with you! For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like those condemned to die in the arena. We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to human beings. 10 We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, we are dishonored! 11 To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. 12 We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; 13 when we are slandered, we answer kindly. We have become the scum of the earth, the garbage of the world—right up to this moment.

Paul’s Appeal and Warning

14 I am writing this not to shame you but to warn you as my dear children. 15 Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel. 16 Therefore I urge you to imitate me. 17 For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.

18 Some of you have become arrogant, as if I were not coming to you. 19 But I will come to you very soon, if the Lord is willing, and then I will find out not only how these arrogant people are talking, but what power they have. 20 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. 21 What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline, or shall I come in love and with a gentle spirit?

I think Paul is just warning the Church to be very careful. The fruit of their actions is arrogance and things that are not the same fruit as Paul and Apollos and the other apostles are producing. Yet they are acting like they are above everyone else and know better then everyone else…

We should watch our own actions… is what we believe God is teaching us producing good fruit in us, or are we becoming prideful and arrogant and acting like the world? Are we listening to those who we know to be close to God?

… God, thank you for continuing to work in my friend and her brother, I thank you for the encouraging talks you gave them and I pray that you would cause them both to seek your face and may you show them your love and your grace and overshadow them with your power. I pray that he would return to you and that his faith would be strong and unwavering, and that she would be encouraged and strengthened and closer to you then ever before and that she would trust you as she never has. I pray that his friend living there would continue to be a good thing, and that it would confirm what you’ve spoken to them, and that she would bring up issues that need to be dealt with… and I pray that she also would be drawn closer to you and that she and my friend would become friends through your love and grace. … I pray for my cousin and his wife that you would really work in their lives and hearts and marriage. God please, every day give them strength and forgiveness and trust and grace for each other. Break down walls and help them to communicate openly and honestly with one another. Please teach them to be friends again as well. God may you be honored and greatly glorified in their marriage. …I pray for my friend and her bf, that you would be with them, help them to move slowly physically, but to push each other in leaps and bounds in their relationships with you. May they honor you and glorify you and bring you praise. May they respect each other and truly honor you in all they do. … I pray for protection for my cousin and that she would be brought closer to your heart…. I pray for my friends looking for jobs, that you would please show them where you want them to be and how you want them to serve you. Please speak to them and guide them… Draw them closer to you and work in and through them. Father I thank you for my marriage and my wonderful husband. I pray that my continued pregnancy wouldn’t take away from what I can give him emotionally and physically, but I pray that you would teach me to serve him dispite my weaknesses and shortcomings. I pray for strength and wisdom and for guidance to use my time wisely. I pray for the housing situation that you would PLEASE let things start moving, even today. I feel stuck where I am and would like to be  able to get things moved and rearranged and settled so I can move on in other areas. But, if there is a reason for me to wait, please show me what it is so I can work that out. I pray for strength and encouragement for my husband… thank you for the blessing and joy and constant source of love and comfort he is to me… God I appreciate him and respect him so much, I am so grateful you have given us this time together and I thank you for every day that you continue to give us. Please help me to show him how much I love having him in my life in everything I say and do.  Thank you for my wonderful family and all the blessings you have given me, Father.

1 Corinthians 3

New International Version (NIV)

The Church and Its Leaders

3 Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly —mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not mere human beings?

What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor. For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.

10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.

16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.

18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”[a]; 20 and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”[b]21 So then, no more boasting about human leaders! All things are yours, 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas[c] or the world or life or death or the present or the future —all are yours, 23 and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God.

(1) We are called to be more then just mere humans. We are God’s chosen people, His ambassadors, priests, salt and light to the earth and the other people here. Jealousy and bickering and things like that are not to be accepted among our ranks as Christians. God has called us to a higher standard, and has empowered us to rise to it. We need to accept His grace and surrender our selfish natures and live as He has called us to be.

(2) We each have a specific calling in each situation. Sometimes it’s planting a seed in someone’s life, sometimes it’s watering something that’s already there… (Sometimes I think some people are the sunshine, too… :)) But, no matter what our calling is, ultimately, we are only doing what God has called us to do, He is the one who makes things happen, and we—who cannot see the big picture—must realize that we are not solely responsible for what happens. There are other people God has called to be apart of each person’s life. Sometimes what we say we think had a huge impact—but we can’t get big egos over that because we do not know what came before or after to make our words have that effect—it was all God. There are other times we think we completely botched something and said all the wrong things—God still had a purpose for having us there at that point in time with that person, and we can’t beat ourselves up and give up because we don’t know what came before or what will come after us. God will use us and our willing hearts and weak bodies to accomplish His purpose no matter what. God knows the big picture… and we need to remember that we are just a part of that… at the same time, we ARE a part of that, and we need to be seeking His will for us in it so that we can do our very best in whatever role He has us play.

…Hey God, there are so many needs right now… My cousin and his wife…God, I can’t even imagine what that situation must be like for them individually or as a couple… or how difficult it must be for their close family and friends… God, I don’t know what to pray for except for you. You to be there with them, You to surround them with your peace, You to hold them together with commitment and faithfulness, You to fill their hearts with love, You to tear down walls and bring unconditional forgiveness, You to restore trust, You to be there to lean against, You to strengthen their weary and crushed hearts, You to bring healing and hope and restoration. Open their eyes to see their need for you and may they rely on you for all they need and see you in everything that happens. I pray for my friend and her brother… I can’t imagine the hurt going on in that relationship either… God I pray for her that you would keep her trusting and holding on to you. You might be all she has–but she has you–don’t let her let go of that. Whisper peace into her heart as you hold her close. May she see your comfort and your love and your guidance in what comes ahead. God I pray that she would seek you more every day and that you would reveal yourself to her. Father I pray for her brother that you would break him and show him plainly who you are and anything else he needs to see to return to you. God…renew his faith… renew his love for you. Fill him with passion and grant him purpose and a renewed love for his sister… May there be forgiveness and truth and light and love. When the x comes I pray that you would use her being there to really strengthen his relationship with  you–and through that, his relationship with his sister. and I pray that reconciliation and forgiveness and love between the sister and the x would happen too… I know in you all things are possible… and in you, miracles are a way you bring yourself glory–Father, bring glory and honor to your name through this situation in the next few weeks. I pray for my cousin, that you would protect her… God… I know she’s super vulnerable and seeking and hurt and just wanting to be loved and needed. Father please bring her closer to you, and protect her body and soul…. I know not everything she’s doing is pleasing to you, and God that makes me scared that she’ll get hurt again… and I don’t want that. I know you don’t like seeing her hurt either… Father please protect her. This guy sounds initially like a really good guy… he has his faults too… but, I pray that they would both find you, and repent and find your forgiveness and restoration and love in you and in each other and have a beautiful relationship. I pray for my sister doing camp–that you would really use this to show her her calling… I pray that you would also bring or reveal a guy in her life who will love and cherish her… I really want to see her happily married like I am… I pray for my married sister–that you would bless her with a child that she so desperately wants… please God. Like Hannah and Samuel… I know she will bring up her child to honor and love you and serve you…please God… And I pray for my little brother, that you would either decrease his love for the girl of his dreams, or break down the barriers in her mind and wake her up to the man he is becoming in You and help her to trust you that you can work the little things out.  So many other people out there too God… you know their hearts and their needs, draw them closer to you… Please work things out for Nat and I these next two weeks… (God I really don’t want to work today… please please please don’t make me…) please let everything work out with moving and the wedding and the dr appt and everything else… thank you for the wonderful husband he is and the time we’ve been able to spend together… 🙂

1 Corinthians 2

1 Corinthians 2

New International Version (NIV)

2 And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.[a] For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.

God’s Wisdom Revealed by the Spirit

We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. However, as it is written:

“What no eye has seen,
what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”[b]
the things God has prepared for those who love him—

10 these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit.

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.[c] 14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. 15 The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, 16 for,

“Who has known the mind of the Lord
so as to instruct him?”[d]

But we have the mind of Christ.

(1) Anything we do to reach others, any kindness or words of love or preaching, MUST be done through God’s power so that their faith will rest in Him—not on what we did/said to them.

(2) God has given us His Spirit in order that we might understand Him and His ways better…

…God, I pray for my cousin and his wife again… God please please work a miracle between them. Break their hearts–especially hers, tear down the walls of anger and bitterness and blame…and probably a lot of guilt and shame there too. God please just speak into their lives and give them a marriage that will honor and glorify you and testify to your redemptive power. Please work in and through them God. Please give their families and friends access to them and words of wisdom and encouragement to share with them. Give them open hearts and minds to you and to those you have placed in their lives. God I pray for my friends who are job hunting. Please give them wisdom and discernment and much godly counsel as they seek to find your place for them in this next stage of life. God please give them peace about what you want them to do and give them clear vision for what you want them to do. Thank you for giving me hope about my housing situation–I’m super super excited to see how you’re coming through just in time. Thank you so much for continuing to take care of me. God I love you and I want to know you more. Please help me to get the books done in time… Please be with Nat and I.

1 Corinthians 1

1 Corinthians 1

1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,

To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours:

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge — God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you. Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

A Church Divided Over Leaders

10 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters,[a] in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. 11 My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas[b]”; still another, “I follow Christ.”

13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so no one can say that you were baptized in my name. 16 (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don’t remember if I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Christ Crucified Is God’s Power and Wisdom

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written:

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”[c]

20 Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22 Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not —to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him. 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”[d]

(1) v4-9– Paul tells us that God has enriched us—blessed us with speech and knowledge—and given the Church every kind of spiritual gift, in order to glorify Himself among us and keep us standing firm. To me, this indicates that God has eqipped me for any and every situation He will allow me to be in, with speech and knowledge, I need not be afraid of running into people that God wants me to talk to. With spiritual gifts—any opportunity/situation God puts me in, I don’t have to be afraid that I don’t have what it takes, because He will give me whatever it takes… God is faithful…

(2) We cannot allow quarrels and divisions separate us. Christ created us to be unified in mind and thought and in what we say—and to treat each other with Love. Christ overcomes all obstacles through his Love.

(3) God takes those who are available….not those who are able. Where you feel weak and unqualified, scared and unsure, unknowledgeable and very very capable of failing and messing up—God takes over and proves to you and the rest of the world His power and ability and strength. Sometimes I think God enjoys pushing us into the places we feel most exposed and unsure just to blow us away with Himself and His ability and purposes. It’s when we feel in control and able to do things, that we often don’t let Christ work through us… but when we don’t know what we’re doing or how to do it, we beg Christ to take over—and He does… funny how that works, eh?

God I want to pray specifically for my cousin and his wife, and for my friends who are job hunting… For both I pray for wisdom and guidance and your hand in their lives. For my cousin I just pray that you would give him grace and forgiveness and the strength to go on and for her heart to be broken and for them both to seek you and your face and your forgiveness and your will. For my job hunting friends I pray that you would grant them clarity and godly counsel and confirmation from many people about what you want them to do and where you want them to go, and the grace to accept your will.
